New to New York or just visiting? This quick guide explains how to dial New York phone numbers — locally, internationally, and for toll-free or premium lines.

New York Phone Number Format

New York phone numbers generally have 3 parts:

1. The country code

The United States country code is +1 (or just 1 when dialing within the U.S.).

2. The area code

New York City has several area codes, depending on the borough:

  • Manhattan: 212, 646, 332.
  • Brooklyn: 718, 347, 929.
  • Queens, Bronx, Staten Island: 718, 347, 929.

Mobile numbers may also use these area codes.

3. The local number

This is a 7-digit number, like 555-1234.

How to Dial New York Phone Numbers

There are 3 common ways to call a New York phone number:

1. Dial the international number

For example, +1 212 555 1234 or 001 212 555 1234.
Use this format if you’re calling from another country. The +1 is the U.S. country code.

2. Dial the national number

For example, (212) 555-1234 or 212-555-1234.
Use this format if you’re calling from anywhere within the U.S.

3. Dial the local number

For example, 555-1234.
You can use this short version only when you’re calling from the same area code.

Example 1: +1 212 555 1234, 001 212 555 1234, (212) 555-1234, and 555-1234 (if you’re in 212 area) — are all the same number.

Example 2: +1 929 343 3333, 001 929 343 3333, and 929-343-3333 — are the same mobile number.

How to Format New York Phone Numbers

In the U.S., follow the E.123 international format: +1 212 555 1234 — where +1 is the U.S. country code, 212 is the area code, and the rest is the local number.

  • Without the country code, write it as: (212) 555-1234
  • Mobile numbers use the same format. For example: +1 929 343 3333 ➝ (929) 343-3333

Each part is separated by a space or dash, and the area code is typically placed in parentheses when writing locally.
